If you have ever been a yo-yo dieter or someone that is continually on a fad or crash diet, or just someone that follows the latest diet trends like the HCG diet or the flat belly diet or the Hollywood cookie diet, or my personal favorite. the cabbage soup diet (YUCK) – then this is a great article for why you should avoid those diets and stick to eating real food to achieve true long term weight loss success.
Sure you have probably achieved some short term success with these other crash diet plans but do you want short term results or long term results with all the extra benefits of health, vitality and a smoking hot body?
Don’t you all love those quick fixes and find yourself in constant quest for quick ways to lose weight? You go along with every promise that this crash diet will work; you even get in the craze of trying the latest fad diet like the HCG diet, cabbage soup diet, Hollywood cookie diet that involves calorie reduction or much worse, deprivation. Don’t you find it amazing that in as short as 3 weeks during the diet; you get to have the body you always wanted? Perhaps, maybe you will lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks. BUT what seems like success in the beginning often ends up in tears and frustration 8 weeks later as not only have you put all that weight back on again but also you are actually bigger than when you started the ridiculous diet plan in the first place.
(I am probably not going to gain many friends by saying this but this is my educated opinion and I am sure many of you will be nodding your head in agreement)
More often than not, the first thing you lose whilst on a diet plan is water weight. Did I mention the diets I am referring to? Yes those over-hyped ones like the HCG diet, the cabbage soup diet, Hollywood cookie diet, plus many more severely reduced calorie diets including those diets that substitute meals for liquids in a can or make you eat a 300-400 calorie protein bar that tastes like candle wax. Then much worse than losing the water weight, you start to lose your muscle as you are basically starving yourself and depriving your body of the essential nutrients you need to sustain your muscle -which is the last thing you want to happen. Muscle as we have learned, weighs more than fat, so on the scale it appears all fine and dandy but…here is what is really going on..
Once you lose muscle weight, your metabolism slows down, as a result of calorie and nutrient deficiency. Even though you think you look and feel great after losing 10 pounds in 2 weeks you have unintentionally slowed down your metabolism.
Since you think you have achieved your dream figure, you ditch your silly diet – that let’s face it was ridiculously hard to follow anyway and resort back to your old eating habits. BUT this gives way to a new problem…
Unfortunately, you are now in a worse situation then when you started the crash diet. You now have a much slower metabolism, because of the muscle loss that occurred whilst crash dieting. This is what happens when you try these radical diets they often lead to yo-yo dieting which totally messes up your metabolism. Once you have finished the crash diet, you pile back on all the weight that you lost again and probably add on a little more that you temporarily lost in the first place due to the slower metabolism that you now have! Arghhh it’s enough to tear your hair out – I hear you.
This goes to show that crash dieting only works in the short term and not long term. Sure it’s great when you look on that scale and see that you have lost 4lbs (2kg) in one week but in reality it’s all water weight or key muscle that you’ve lost. A safer and more sustainable amount to lose in one week is 1-2lbs (depending on how much you have to lose in the first place), and to do this eating the foods that our bodies were designed to eat – which are real foods, not processed or specially marketed foods – just plain old real foods that include meats, vegetables, fruits, eggs etc. Life eating these real foods doesn’t have to be boring. It just has to involve real food as that way you are fueling your body the right way and you shouldn’t be losing your muscle, slowing your metabolism OR losing your sanity!!

Over time you shouldn’t even focus on your weight, instead, you should focus more on losing body fat and adding on lean muscle to increase your metabolism. Both of which can be done via eating real food and adding some exercise into your lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be a lot of exercise in fact there are many 20 minute workouts that are super effective on my site. Note that by adding lean muscle, your metabolism speeds up therefore, you will be burning more calories – even at rest, yep even in your sleep you will burn more calories if you have more lean muscle and less body fat. Of course the less body fat you have and the more lean muscle tissue you have, the faster your metabolism will be, thus you can forget about counting calories for life! Who has the time to count calories anyway right?
Hopefully I have convinced you to turn yourself into a fat-burning machine and avoid trying those crazy fad diets. Moral or lesson of the story: If you intend to lose fat permanently, do not resort to fad crash diets nor deprive yourself of the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs to keep lean muscle by doing a calorie deficit diet like those ones mentioned. Instead, focus on losing body fat rather than body weight and work on adding lean muscle.
Should you wish to determine if you are really losing body fat, use your clothes as a determinant of your fat loss (if the fit is snug or lose). If you can now fit on those skinny jeans that you haven’t been able to wear the last 5 years, congratulations as you know you are losing fat effectively! You can also measure the area within your belly button, waist, chest and thighs
