Why We Crave Sugar?

Sugar is a carbohydrate – a very simple carbohydrate and carbohydrates release serotonin – the happy-feel-good chemical in the brain so it’s only natural that we crave sugar…

…however there are other naturally sweet sugars that we could eat instead – for instance try a few strawberries, watermelon or grapes.

They are the sweeter of the fruits and will simulate the same effect, but be much healthier for you.


How to Stop the Sugar Cravings

Magnesium is a mineral that is supposed to suppress sugar cravings and raw almonds are a great source of magnesium so instead of reaching for the chocolate bar reach for a handful of almonds.

Below are a few more tips for you to help kick those sugar cravings to the curb.

  1. Have fruit or almonds handy – in your desk drawer or handbag or in the glove box of the car (Ok, maybe not fruit in the glove box but almonds are ok!). Many shops carry almonds that are in snack sized packets ready for you or your lunch box.
  2. Don’t deny yourself – if you really really must satisfy that craving have it! Just make sure you have a snack size not a king size! Make it 150 calories or under. Savor the taste rather than swallowing it in one gulp.
  3. Compromise – try chocolate that contains 70% or more of cocoa – only two squares is enough to satisfy your craving and the cocoa acts as an antioxidant so it’s win-win!
  4. Eat regularly – Often we crave sweet things because we are hungry so don’t let yourself get too hungry, if your stomach is making gurgling noises it’s too late! Fill up on protein and fiber filled food. Good fats also help to satisfy.
  5. Grab some gum then clean your teeth. Be mindful of having too much artificial sweetener though as this can cause insulin spikes that can stimulate appetite, so even better have a glass of water with lemon or lime then clean your teeth and the craving will be gone!
